The Face Behind the Mask: the Truth About Sexual Assault Survivors

Presented by Brandi Cuevas, M.S.

Many survivors of sexual abuse report feeling as though they go through life wearing a mask, unable to be true to themselves or others. This façade is usually colored by what is socially appropriate and acceptable: smiling, happy, okay, doing fine… Under the mask all the aftermath processes (e.g. depression, suicidal ideation, financial costs, physical memories, etc.) take place to include the struggle to hide what is really going on. In recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), we will talk about fighting the stigma of sexual assault, prevention strategies, the role of an MFT, and available resources for survivors.

COST (1.5 CEU and snacks)

Free for 2016 SAAMFT Members and Subscribers

$5 for students (without CEU certificate)

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Brandi Cuevas is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LMFT-A) under the supervision of Dr. Maria Flores, PhD. She is a recent graduate of Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) (2014) and has served as a Sexual Harassment/Assault Response & Prevention (SHARP) Representative for 7 years with the U.S. Army Reserve. As a 19-year veteran, she has been influenced by the medical model and has come to understand the need for adaptation to a bio-psycho-social model, as not everyone’s ailments are physical only. She has a secondary licensure as a Certified Exercise Physiologist (EP-C) and uses it in conjunction with systemic theory to create a whole mind-body approach to treatment. She is a published first/co-author and reviewer for journals in the areas of stress, motivational states and exercise. More recently she has become a contributing author for a book about adapting and overcoming for Veterans. She is an Applied Suicide Intervention Skills (ASIST) Responder with extensive experience in providing health assessments, wellness coaching, and emergency response. She is working towards PTSD certification and building her Private Practice.
