Fall Conference- Discernment Counseling

SAAMFT Fall Conference

Discernment Counseling for Couples on the Brink of Divorce

Up to 30% of couples who present for therapy would fall into the category of a "mixed agenda" couple- meaning one spouse is not fully committed to or hopeful about couples therapy. Most traditional couples therapy models have not really given us a means of successfully engaging those couples into effective couples therapy, much less down the path of healthy divorce. Discernment counseling, developed from over a decade of research and clinical work with these couples, fills the gap for couples therapists. This training in discernment counseling is intended to prepare you for effectively guiding mixed agenda couples through a short term (1-5 sessions) intentional decision making process regarding the future of their relationship, and then transition with them as they continue forward into either a full commitment to couples therapy or ending the relationship with as much dignity and intentionality as possible. Dr. Davenport will take us through the Discernment Counseling protocol from beginning to end. During our lunch break, we will have a panel of family attorneys share with us important information about divorce options- vital information to equip us for the discernment counseling process.
